MARK GREY, 2009 BEST DRAMA
Film: "Holy Hush"
Agape Theatre, London England, UK
What was your first reaction when you heard the news that you had won the category?
I didn't know in advance. I guess some did as they had sent folk their to pick up awards for them by proxy. For me, it was a "Wow". I wanted to be part of the drama section but thought I couldn't qualify as I come from the UK and would be in the International section. So I felt honoured just to be allowed to eat at the drama table. Then with the announcement Holy Hush had won, I felt a sense of pride, vindication, inspired to go help others achieve the same, humility, all rolled into one. Great.
(Note: SONscreen does not indicate winners in advance, unless under special circumstance and per SSFF discretion)
What was the inspiration behind your film?
The theme of the film is quite a dark one, so it's difficult to talk about the "inspiration" for the film. Having said that what "inspired" Holy Hush was this reoccurring awareness that there is abuse not only present but rife throughout the clergy of myriad of denominations, and for the most part it's being covered up. It's not being discussed, addressed, or eliminated. Then I thought if the clergy are essentially God's mouthpiece of earth and are essentially "good people" what would drive these good God fearing people to cover such heinous act up? Hence the film Holy Hush.
Why do you feel a festival like SONscreen is important to have?
Sonscreen is important and it is essential. I think the NAD has shown great vision in hosting and promoting the festival. Media is the way forward. it is the 21st century's communication tool. In the same way the printed word was the tool of the 20th century. Many Christian creative artists are studying media and film and Sonscreen gives them an opportunity to create something that will inspire, impact and change lives, in an arena where they can develop and mature creatively, and do God's will.
What new project are your working on and how can people reach you or see more of your work?
We have a couple of things in development, a couple of projects which are not faith based. We're trying to put the funding together for those. There are 3 projects we are moving towards pre production that are faith/morality based that deal with the brotherhood of all races, psychological domestic violence, and teens and street crime. Probably said too much already but they're exciting. Last time I was so forthcoming I missed out to another producer, but C'est la vie! It's all in God's Hands. I have a couple of projects listed on vimeo under Carmel Greystone. www.vimeo.com
